Today, pet products containing CBD are becoming increasingly popular and could eventually help inflate the $72 billion pet owners spent on their companions in 2018, according to the American Pet Products Association.
CBD has found its way into pet treats, supplements, topical products and more. Although research is just in its beginning stages, anecdotal evidence has enticed both pet owners and veterinarians to jump on the hemp wagon.
According to Hemp Industry Daily, veterinarians have become one of the best resources for spreading the word about CBD products and its purported benefits for furry patients. Word-of-mouth through message boards has further helped pet parents zero in on specific products that may help relieve the symptoms of their pet’s conditions and ailments.
From easing inflammation in arthritic pets to eliminating seizures and anxiety attacks, pet owners report having found results with CBD products that they couldn’t find through prescriptions. Because CBD doesn’t have the side effects that often accompany prescription medications, they appreciate the gentler, more natural approach it provides. The common remedy for pain from arthritis for pets are nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications such as carprofen that, unfortunately, are associated with a laundry list of side effects including gastrointestinal bleeding and liver disease.
The passing of the 2018 Farm Bill that legalized the cultivation of hemp crops has opened the door to more scientific research. Dr. Stephanie McGrath is leading a Colorado State University study on the efficacy of CBD treatment of epilepsy and osteoarthritis in dogs. According to McGrath, “This pilot study is important and it does seem like there is a positive effect from the use of CBD for dogs with epilepsy.”
Researchers from Cornell University of Veterinary Medicine led a study developed to determine if CBD is beneficial in controlling pain in dogs with osteoarthritis. The results appear to support the benefits of CBD showing reduced inflammation, significant reduction in pain and increased activity. Other research is working to confirm anecdotal evidence that CBD can be used to help treat seizures, stress, anxiety and gastrointestinal issues.
There are several things to consider before giving CBD to your pet. First, ask your veterinarian if it is safe. Additionally, it is critical that the CBD be free of THC as, according to Dr. Lisa Parshley, a veterinary oncologist in Olympia, Washington, dogs are ten times more sensitive to THC than humans. Lastly, you need to test the right serving size for your pet, just as in humans, it is best to start with the recommended lowest dosage and increase according to the instructions provided and with the blessing of your veterinarian.
